DDR3 Hardware Question
« on: June 07, 2010, 09:32:58 pm »
May have bit myself in the ass for not paying attention here, so got a question.

Got the parts for my new rig, and the MB is compatible with DDR3 memory, running 1066/1333/1866 (OC) mhz speeds. I wasn't paying attention and got 1600mhz instead...even though it runs higher and lower speeds, i'm going to assume it would be a big no-no to try and run 1600mhz on it? My gut says not to do it, but figured i'd see if anyone here had done that and gotten away damage free. Since otherwise i'll have to RMA the shit through newegg which will probably take a week or more.. :icon_sad2

You can run it at "stock" speeds to set the system up and then go back and set the ram at higher speeds later (make shure to lock/manualy set the PCI and ATA speeds to 100 and 33 first so the don't over clock and fry stuff).

Which CPU did you pick up?

it will run on stock but he's losing a lot of mhz it will default to 1333, ^ i posted the timings that should work well

and dont forget to use thermal paste on the cpu to cooler or youl be in trouble

Most 1600 ram will do 1800 on stock volts as well.

None of my AMD overclocks have been with a boost in voltage ever.
My AMD Optrons (server cpu's) get 1Ghz extra on stock volts.

Alright, thanks for advice. Picked up the AMD Phenom II X6 2.8ghz CPU, gonna see how 6 cores treats me. I'll let you all know how the project goes, it's been 3 years since I built a PC for myself and i'm rusty on hardware!

Wow...the 6 core.
Myself for the same TDP I would have gone with the 4 core with an unlocked multiplier (600Mhz faster out of the box).

I hear that the new FX chipset can turn off cores...so overclocking on less cores saves power and heat.
Is the MB you have use this new 8**FX chipset?

Personally I have found that as far as -gaming- goes all that anything need for a CPU is 2 cores at 3Ghz and a good GFX system.

I am hungry to hear what you can get this new setup to do.

Q. What is the MB and most important what is the PSU you have?

I have found that the PSU can make or break overclocks.
In my own systems I use only PC Power & Cooling PSU's and have found that on stock volts I get higher overclock than people with the same CPU/RAM/MB do when they have to boost voltages.
It has to do with PSU regulation and filtering.
