AMD Phenom II @ 6.3Ghz
« on: November 26, 2008, 03:39:01 am »
The new AMD AMD Phenom II was tested last Friday at a public showing before it goes on sale the first part of Jan 2009 (about 7 weeks time).

Off the shelf the improved quad core CPU is 3Ghz and with air cooler and stock volts easily hits a 33+% overclock @ 32C (90F) just like the Optrons used to do.
In fact all my Optrons with DFI MB's did a full 50% OC on stock volts.
With high end cooling and a .11 volt boost the Phenom II hit 6.3Ghz or over a 100% overclock!

The new Phenom II will be AM2+ compatible and able to use DDR3 Ram.

I wonder what the high end server version (like Optron) of this CPU will be able to do in about a years time?

The only thing I like about Obama is every time he gets on TV and speaks about the economy the stock market drops!
AMD was selling for $1.62 per share after his last speech and INTC had dropped over $2.
I bought another 1K shares of AMD two weeks ago and 198 of INTC...the next year or two is looking really good for me right now.

Edited topic and post above from 6.2 to 6.3Ghz.

Also I see that there will in fact be two versions...an AM2+ and AM3.
One will use DDR2 only, and the other will use DDR3 only rather than the original "use both" idea.
Pick your flavor.

neat, now i just need to get my nitrogen cooling system out of the garage that i never had a use for till now.

But still. that is impressive. i wonder how long till we can actually use 6'3 ghz processors (rest of the hardware wont catch up lol)
Enjoy your creative game-play, whatever that may include.

Clock speed increases are impressive, but hardware manufacturers are up against huge challenges, and single core processing is no longer where the future lies.

As a game developer I can say with confidence the future is in parallel processing; 64 and 128 CPU cores and beyond are how developers should be thinking.

Up until a few months ago speed increases were (almost) free to programmers.  Now, developers need to change the way they design and implement systems to take advantage of this and it's not easy (trust me)!

Well this old man has been around for decades now and I will say you are correct.
A few of the new software tittle's that are due out 2009 will not even boot or even install if your system does not even have at least two CPU cores.

AMD pwns Intel IMO. I made the change from Intel to AMD and have never looked back. The only downfall I have seen with AMD is that they run hotter than Intel. I have the AMD Athlon x2 6400+ and a 9400 GeForce card to go with it and they are both hardware of yester-year but are both good enough to run games less than a month old, on the highest of settings (i.e I ran FarCry 2 on the highest settings) and very smoothly. To think those two and a few other little bits and pieces only cost me $450.

I won't be in a hurry to upgrade to the Phenom II though, any ideas what it will cost in AUS$?

Well any electronics or internet connection in AU is well over 2 times what it would cost in USD's.
I would imagine that the USD cost would be a good 20% or less than the same speed Intel CPU.

I also am not in any hurry.
I can aford to wait untill the system I am on now DIES first as I put it together this March...AMD dual core @ 3Ghz stock,8800 GTS (G92),Coolermaster case,PC Power & Cooling 610 and 2 X 1GB of RAM.
Runs 10 torrent files,4 security programs and plays Frontline:FoW on high settings without any lag at all...and with XP running it I only use 49% of my RAM!

When the system dies I should be able to get the server version of the Phenom II cheap...and hope'n for a simple dual core as well.
AMD server CPU's over clock about 50% with everything on stock volts.

It is now Jan 8th,2009 and right as claimed the new Phenom II is on sale.
Here is a review from Tom's Hardware which has also given it it's Recommended Buy Award:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/phenom-ii-940,2114.html

Price for the unlocked CPU is MSRP of $275 USD with price cuts to come as the months move along.

I've used AMD for 8-9 years (K6, 1900+, 4800+) for my main computers. Temperatures and efficiency uses to be great (the 4800+ AM2 idles at 28 deg C), but intel seems to have a big advantage in performance despite of this Phenom II launch. Sure it's cheap (but only 20 dollars less than i7 920). However, other components like MB and memory are a lot cheaper. Perhaps 100 USD less in total.

But 100$ is nothing if you're going to use the comp for 3 years, so I went and built an i7 920 rig last week.  :icon_biggrin2

Speaking of memory, how much longer do you think it will take these guys to get into terrabytes?

True to it's word to bring out AM3 Phenom II CPU's this month AMD is on track.

The AM3 CPU's will use DDR3 RAM...and will drop right into either AM3/AM2+/AM2 motherboards and also run with DDR2 Ram used in the non-AM3 motherboards.

Cool huh?

Also Tomshardware has done the "first day of sales" testing and found:
Quote
What does make sense is the Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition on an existing AM2/AM2+ setup, leveraging cheap DDR2 memory. Gone are the days of Core 2 Duo's dominance over the value-oriented gaming market. Now that AMD has its hat in the ring, there's a lot more to like about the oddness of three cores.
Although not the top-of-the-line AMD Phenom II the X3 720 overclocks a full 1Ghz on stock volts and @ $145 USD m.s.r.p. is -the- CPU to buy.

I am happy to have been buying 1K shares of AMD each month so far starting back in Nov 2008...yet I have bought 200 shares of INTC (Intel) each month as well.

Tomshardware puts a AMD Phenom II X3 720 to an overclock test.
The $145 USD CPU overclocked a full 3Ghz!
Quote
Today we put AMD's latest Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition processor to the test. AMD has proven it definitely has a winner here, at least for the hardcore overclockers out there. The chip was able to easily bench 100% faster then stock without any significant problems. The X3 720 Black Edition will definitely be a favorite processor for those that love and enjoy tuning their systems beyond manufacturer specifications.

Meanwhile today a AMD Phenom II X4 has broken the worlds overclock record...this was the $229 USD CPU.

*broke the FutureMark 3DMark? 05 World Record
*became the first quad core x86 processors in History to break the 6.5GHz barrier in a public demonstration
*became the first to operate at temperatures approaching absolute zero

Turn a 3-Core AMD Phenom 2 into a 4-Core!
Quote
The processor shows up with 4 cores in Windows, and according to benchmarks posted by the site, the 4th core had a real impact on scores. Those with 3-core Phenom II's, try this out!
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-phenom-cpu,7080.html

Note that the site used a AMD Phenom II 710 which is about $110 USD.

Back "in the day" AMD stomped Intel...not any longer.

My LAPTOP i7 out preforms the CPU that is the topic of the thread and only uses 15 Watts.
