phpbb vs smf vs ??
« on: October 01, 2008, 10:31:25 am »
Question for web admins: TKC used to use phpBB a long time ago. Now we use SMF. Why the change? Is phpBB no good? Is SMF the best free forum package? Are there any other forum packages that compare?

I think PhpBB is more open to hacking exploits and open source but nearly any forum can be hacked itf you got the right gear i guess but i think Smf is more secure.

PHPBB was ok, but it had very bad security. SMF is one of the most secure boards, and we have had very little trouble with it. It's also easier to update and manage. The only thing that made phpbb better was that people could request membership to user groups by clicking a button, now they have to pm the group leader.

I don't know about the new versions of PHPBB though.

There is also one other board that's considered to be good, invision power board, but it isn't freeware.
