SoftIce
« on: April 21, 2008, 10:29:17 pm »
Throughout this forum, Mullah Omar suggests using SoftIce. So I've spent hours trying to get SoftIce to work on my system (XP SP2, nVidia gfx) with no success.

Right now, I use OllyDbg with Cheat Engine and IDA Pro. For the purposes of game hacking, is SoftIce better than these tools in any way? i.e., Am I missing out?

If I were to hack something like PunkBuster, would I still be able to use something like Cheat Engine?

softice is the ultimate system debug tool it can actually pause the operating system while you inspect its content

softice will run on xp , you need the nt version

good old ctrl + d .. system halted

the other tools are like comparing an adult ( softice ) to a child of 2 ( anything but softice ie other tools )

softice is the ultimate debug tool

I think SoftIce is discontinued now. But it is a good program if you manage to get it running. The one supplied with driverstudio 3.1 was designed for use with XP (3.0 didnt work even if it's possible it said so) but don't remember if it worked for SP2. 2.6 or was it 2.7 worked for some reason though. However, I dont think any Sice version will work for x64 or Vista and probably not for the upcoming SP3 either.

OllyDbg doesn't work for me for some reason as I use x64, but Cheat Engine has helped a lot even though it has its limitations.

Sice is more practical, a window pops, no alt-tabs or similar, everything pauses (even the windows clock). Pretty easy to use too. Setting breakpoints on winapi functions is a walk in the park. But there's a lot of work to get it running and to keep it in a working state.
Heckling is an art, and game hacking a science.
